For West Virginia families considering a virtual school for a younger student, a day in the life of an online student at Virtual Preparatory Academy of West Virginia stands out for two reasons: a small-group session built into every morning for targeted skill support, and a music, art, or enrichment block built into every afternoon. Both are part of the daily schedule, not optional extras. Here is what that day looks like for a second grade student.

Starting the Morning Routine

The school day at Virtual Preparatory Academy of West Virginia begins at 8:00 AM when students log into Canvas to review the day's activities and announcements. The first live class, reading instruction with class participation, starts at 8:30 AM after students have had a few minutes to get settled and oriented.

For younger elementary students, the 8:00 AM log-in routine helps establish a consistent school-day starting point and gives Learning Coaches a clear signal that the academic day is beginning.

Attending Live Online Classes

Live, certified-teacher-led instruction in reading, math, and science or social studies anchors the elementary school day at VPA West Virginia. While live classes are strongly encouraged daily, attendance is required specifically for activities like testing and small-group sessions.

Morning Lessons

Morning live sessions cover reading instruction with class participation and a guided math lesson with interactive practice before the small-group session begins. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, meeting West Virginia's daily instructional time requirements across the elementary grades.

Interactive Activities

Guided math with interactive practice and the small-group session give students more than one format for engaging with their teacher during the school day. The small-group session at 10:45 AM is specifically designed to provide targeted skill support in a smaller, more focused setting than a whole-class live lesson.

Independent Learning Time

Students complete independent reading practice and assignments in the early afternoon before the day's wrap-up. Physical workbooks support kindergarten through third grade students with offline learning alongside digital coursework. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, and the Student Success Team can adjust individual schedules for students who need more or less live class time.

Breaks, Play, and Physical Activity

A lunch break is built into the midday schedule at VPA West Virginia. Learning Coaches can use this window for outdoor play or physical activity between the morning and afternoon blocks. The afternoon enrichment block also gives younger students a creative, lower-pressure close to the academic portion of the day.

Teacher Support and Check-Ins

The Student Success Team at VPA West Virginia can adjust a student's schedule individually, adding more live sessions for students who need more synchronous contact or giving more independent time to students who are managing well on their own. Teachers respond to questions through Canvas, and students end every day with a teacher wrap-up session. Families can find the school calendar and additional resources on the Virtual Preparatory Academy of West Virginia parent and student resources page.

Social Opportunities and Clubs

Students at VPA West Virginia connect with classmates through daily live sessions, the small-group morning session, and afternoon music, art, or enrichment activities. The school also hosts back-to-school events at parks, in-person prom and graduation, college tour visits, and seasonal activities, giving students regular touchpoints with their classmates outside of virtual instruction.
