Reasons Families Make the Switch
West Virginia homeschool families carry a meaningful set of annual responsibilities: filing notice of intent, maintaining records of instruction, and submitting academic assessments to the county superintendent each year. Many families meet these requirements and build strong academic programs at home. Over time, though, the weight of managing all of that, combined with the growing subject-area demands of upper grades, leads some families to look for a different model.
Virtual Preparatory Academy of West Virginia is a public online school that brings certified teacher instruction, a structured daily schedule, and a state-recognized diploma to students who learn from home. It offers the accountability and credential validity of a traditional public school through a fully online format. For families asking how to switch to online school and shift the teaching responsibility to certified professionals, VPA West Virginia is that transition. Learn more about the school on the About VPA West Virginia page.
How Enrollment Works in West Virginia
Under West Virginia Code Section 18-8-1, parents who provide home instruction must file an annual notice of intent with their county superintendent, along with evidence of an annual academic assessment for each child. When a family enrolls their student in a public school, these home instruction obligations end. Families should notify their county superintendent that they are no longer providing home instruction to formally close their annual notice file. Contact your county board of education to confirm the exact process.
West Virginia's compulsory attendance law requires school enrollment for children ages 6 through 17. Families switching mid-year should confirm timing carefully to ensure there is no gap in their student's official enrollment status.
To enroll at VPA West Virginia, students must be West Virginia residents in grades K through 12. Kindergarten students must meet the standard age eligibility requirement for the enrollment year. Required documents include a birth certificate, proof of West Virginia residency, and current immunization records or a valid waiver. Students entering 12th grade must provide a high school transcript.

Transferring Credits and Records
West Virginia does not maintain a uniform statewide policy for transferring homeschool credits into the public school system. VPA West Virginia reviews prior academic work on a case-by-case basis. Families should bring their home instruction records to the enrollment conversation: annual assessment results, completed curriculum documentation, and any academic records that reflect what the student has covered.
West Virginia's home instruction law requires annual academic assessments, which means many families have documented evidence of year-over-year academic progress. Those assessment results are directly relevant to the credit review process at VPA West Virginia. Families who have maintained their records in good order are often in a stronger position than they expect.
For families asking how do you switch to online school and not lose the academic ground their student has covered, bring your records and have that conversation with the counseling team. The goal is to find the right starting point, not to start over.

They lead live sessions, hold enrichment periods, and use breakout rooms during class for one-on-one and small-group support. Success Coaches are assigned to every family before the first day and stay engaged throughout the school year as the family's primary point of contact outside the classroom.
Live and Structured Independent Study
Live sessions at VPA West Virginia are structured for active engagement. Students interact with their teachers and peers during class, ask questions, and work through course material in real time. Between live sessions, students complete independent assignments and projects that reinforce classroom learning and build the habits of consistent, self-managed daily work. Students interested in sports may participate at their local school district with district approval. The extracurricular program expands based on student interest and engagement.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
Notify your county superintendent that you are ending home instruction before or at the time you enroll at VPA West Virginia. West Virginia's annual notice and assessment requirements are tied to the current school year, and closing those obligations formally when you enroll in a public school keeps your family's records clean.
Bring your annual assessment documentation to the enrollment conversation. West Virginia's home instruction law produces a paper trail that is directly useful in a credit review. Families who have completed yearly assessments often have more documented academic progress than they realize.
Plan for a structured daily routine before the school year begins. West Virginia public school attendance requirements apply to all VPA West Virginia students. Having a consistent workspace and morning schedule in place from day one makes the adjustment significantly smoother. Access the school calendar and onboarding resources on the VPA West Virginia parent and student resources page.
